Adelaide April 2009

Adelaide – Salt Creek
April 14th
Tuesday - Day 11

“Head to the Main South Road and turn left.”

“Can’t be, that’ll take us into the city.”

“That’s what they told me in reception.”

Ignoring Glenda’s directions I turned right into Main South Road just up from the caravan park at about 9.30 a.m. Within minutes I realised that this would take us south as the road’s name suggested. Some angst in finding a way off the freeway and we were returning towards Adelaide.

Our destination was Salt Creek on the Coorong but logic dictated that heading towards the city was in the wrong direction. Glenda wanted the main highway to Tailem Bend followed by a turn down through Meningie to the Coorong. In the end she suggested a sharp right and a drive through Blackwood, Mt Barker and back onto the highway.

We soon found ourselves in mountain forest, narrow roads and hilly conditions. Yes, I was a tad stressed and neither of us knew precisely where we were or if we were on the right track. The knowledge that we had plenty of time and that eventually we would find our way there was not its usual comforting self. Regardless fate would have it that we stumbled onto the right road and made it to the Melbourne road. A pity I couldn’t have enjoyed the scenery as much as Glenda did.

We had a quick drink at Tailem Bend and pushed on towards the Coorong. The day was clear and around 22 degrees. Lots of caravans were headed towards Adelaide, probably heading home after Easter. We found a caravan park called “Gemini Downs Holiday Park” near Salt Creek which has little in the way of housing. Poor mobile reception and bugger all television met us.

The park is small but quiet. There’s only us, three older women on bikes with tents and one other trailer camper here so it’s a nice situation. We drove to Pelican Point Observatory and Glenda soon spotted a double banded plover, a first for us thanks again to Glenda’s keen eye. No, I’m not going to go into the history of her first sightings and the infuriating fact that she is only a passive birder…..

“Our” first double banded plover.

With no television and very quiet surrounds it looks like an early night before some passive bird watching and van maintenance tomorrow.

Bird Sightings
Red necked stint, *Double banded plover, Pied currawong, 78 birds,
