Tuesday - Day 4
We slept well and the light rain made for a pleasant feeling in the van. I was up around 8 a.m. for a quick walk and look about the park and beach. On my return Glenda made toast with fried tomatoes and mushrooms. A great start to an overcast day.
We drove to the main info area and walked along the wooden causeway to Granite Island. We passed the horse drawn tram and did the 1.5 km island walk. I imagine this would be spectacular in stormy conditions. The views from the top were terrific.

A chance look down at some little pied cormorants drew our attention to a caspian tern and a sooty oystercatcher nearby. Glenda spotted a lone wader close to the water’s edge. It was bobbing it’s tail nervously and this helped identify it as a common sandpiper. Not so common down here and although I’d identified one in Sanur, Bali this was the first one in Australia for me.
Glenda felt like dining out for lunch so we went to the Victor Hotel for their carvory at $32 per couple. We followed this with a stroll around the shops looking for a red tie for the championships on Saturday. It appears that referees will be expected to wear regulation attire big time.
Late afternoon I drove to the Bluff to try and photograph the eagles. Again the light was poor and I missed a great chance when two magpies gave an eagle short shift and it flew eye level passed me.
I’m hopeful of getting a clear, no, perfect shot one day of some stupid raptor silly enough to come down for a closer look at my camera.
Bird Sightings
Nankeen kestrel, Caspian tern, Sooty oystercatcher, Common sandpiper, White faced heron, 66 birds
